Our 2011 Chardonnay is the first from our new source in the cool western reaches of Sonoma county near Occidental. The vines here were planted in the mid-1980s on their own roots to the Old Wente clone, in beautifully sandy Goldridge soil. The soil type allows the vines to exist without phylloxera, and the vines have settled into maturity beautifully. This is a serious wine, with clean, well-delineated aromas of lemon, flint, cinnamon, clove, peach pit, and distinct minerality. The palate is lush, full and flavorful, but remains nicely structured by bright acids. The wine was fermented in 50% new French Oak barrels with monthly lees-stirring to enrich the wine.
